GREEN LIGHT FOR BRITISH NATIONAL SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND
Contest directors have given the go-ahead for the 2008 British National Surf Championships presented by Fistral Beach Surf Hire in association with Body Glove, Tiger24, Freeriders Surf Shop and Overhead Surf and media partners Carve & Surfgirl Magazine. This weekend (25th & 26th October) will see surfers from across the country converging on Fistral Beach, Newquay, for a predicted huge swell and the opportunity to fight it out for the most prestigious title in the land.
Last year’s British saw some of the best conditions ever witnessed for a contest on British shores with Mark Harris and Beth Mason making the most of the 4-8ft waves to ride all the way to the top spots on the podium. Taking the more senior titles, Jed Stone and Lee Bartlett were also on awesome form, and this year promises to be another showcase of British surfing across all four categories - Women’s, Men’s, Masters and Veterans. The 2008 contest will also see the first live webcasting of the British Open with a team from Tiger24 picking up the action as it unfolds. People across the globe can log on to see their favourite surfers compete in their heats on www.tiger24.com.
A purse of prize money is there for the taking, thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, and with the British team having just returned from the World Surfing Games in Portugal, surfers and spectators alike can look forward to a major weekend on the beach considered by many to be the ‘home’ of British Surfing.
Contest Director Anton Roberts says, “We’re expecting a solid swell meaning ideal conditions for this prestigious contest. 9am Saturday will see the first heats in the water and the action will all certainly kick off!”
