Weekend Saturday and Sunday 25/10/08 26/10/08 Tuesday update...... PRESSURE SYNOPSIS: ***BST ENDS ON SUNDAY at 02:00 back to good ol GMT*** A HUAGE North Atlantic Low from Iceland of about 968 millibars will implode into Northern Scotland late in the week. Followed directly afterwards by another of 985 millibars originally from Southern Greenland which will hit North West Eire, delivering richter scale swell for the Irish boys and the Scots. Due to the magnitude of the swell, and the succession of Lows there will also be a lot of wrap around for the South West and even the East Coast. Meanwhile predominantly South Westerly winds generated by a fat French High of 1030 millibars will push up from the South West, affecting most of Southern UK. Sunday will see the remaining Low still in the 980s just North of Northern Scotland, dominating our weather throughout, and pushing South as the opposing fronts collide. Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
OVERALL: ***BST ENDS ON SUNDAY at 02:00 back to good ol GMT*** The East Coast of Scotland is without a doubt the spot to head for, but knowledge and reefs would be our call; those North of Fitty if you know what I mean! ;0) The English East Coast could be fun, although there is a chance the winds could keep all the real size from getting in. For the rest of us the South and South West will all have swell, read your individual area and the surrounding ones to get the best idea of where to head for. Knowledge and breaking out the map are the key to successful hunting
. Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
BEGINNERS / IMPROVERS: ***BST ENDS ON SUNDAY at 02:00 back to good ol GMT*** Shelter, shelter except for those on the South Coast (East of Devon) who should be happy with anything they get. A good weekend to get wet, if you are down in the South West sheltered spots like the Newquay Town Beaches and Putsborough respectively are the call. Still not cold really so no excuse not to get wet. Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
SCOTLAND: Recommendations: Huge on the West and North Coasts throughout, the East Coast too will be overhead throughout. So spots that are sheltered from the winds are the best places to head for, similar to the last few weekends that have been cooking, search and ye shall find. Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
Saturday: Swell: 10-12ft plus, Wind: South Westerly force 6-8. LW HW LW HW 00:47 07:06 13:11 19:16 1.0m 4.1m 1.6m 4.3m Sunrise: 08:17 Sunset: 17:38 Sunday: Swell: 7-9ft plus, Wind: Westerly force 5-7 plus. LW HW LW HW 00:33 06:48 12:54 18:58 0.9m 4.3m 1.4m 4.5m Sunrise: 08:19 Sunset: 17:35 Areas Covered: Centred on Thurso, but may also mention Edinburgh and Machrihanish in the recommendation area.
EAST COAST: Recommendations: A fun weekend, the only danger is the possibility that the winds could well stop the swell from getting in properly. So at this time the best score would be to head for exposed spots to make the most of what is getting. The early and late birds respectively will probably get the best of what there is. Stay tuned for further updates, as things might change as the week goes on
Saturday: Swell: 3-5ft, Wind: South Westerly force 4-6 plus. HW LW HW LW 02:04 08:44 14:52 21:01 5.2m 1.5m 5.2m 2.0m Sunrise: 07:52 Sunset: 17:38 Sunday: Swell: 4-6ft, Wind: North Westerly force 4-6. HW LW HW LW 01:55 08:31 14:33 20:44 5.4m 1.3m 5.4m 1.8m Sunrise: 07:54 Sunset: 17:36 Areas Covered: Centred on Scarborough but does go from the tip of Norfolk up to Newcastle.
WALES: Recommendations: Shoulder to head high on Saturday with lumpy winds for most of the Gower spots. Those that get shelter from the South Westerly will be cooking. Then on Sunday in theory the winds will have done a 180 degree switch to North Westerlies, so in theory the South Coast spots will benefit. Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
Saturday: Swell: 4-6ft, Wind: South Westerly force 4-6 plus. HW LW HW LW 04:30 10:25 16:51 22:57 7.9m 2.2m 8.4m 1.8m Sunrise: 07:59 Sunset: 17:59 Sunday: Swell: 4-6ft plus, Wind: North Westerly force 3-5. HW LW HW LW 04:20 10:11 16:38 22:37 8.4m 1.8m 8.8m 1.5m Sunrise: 08:01 Sunset: 17:57 Areas Covered: Wales we refer mainly to the Gower area due to our expertise and the increased availability of swell to this area. Areas North / North West of this we consider to be semi-secret / not to be shouted about a lot!
SOUTH WEST COAST: Recommendations: Big and getting bigger, shelter from the South Westerlies is the key throughout. Know a spot that will be good, tell no one! Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
Saturday: Swell: 5-7ft, Wind: South Westerly force 4-6 plus. HW LW HW LW 03:20 09:46 15:40 22:16 6.0m 1.7m 6.4m 1.4m Sunrise: 08:01 Sunset: 18:06 Sunday: Swell: 5-7ft plus, Wind: North Westerly force 3-5. HW LW HW LW 03:07 09:30 15:25 21:56 6.4m 1.4m 6.7m 1.1m Sunrise: 08:03 Sunset: 18:04 Areas Covered: Croyde to Sennen, mainly based around Newquay.
SOUTH COAST: Recommendations: Storm surf as per usual, will probably be solid, and reach as far East as Brighton being 2-ft and then getting bigger. So the Bournemouth will be fun and rideable too. On Sunday the winds should switch, making it offshore. But for spots East of Bantham, that generally means a significant drop in swell size. Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
Saturday: Swell: 3-5ft plus, Wind: South Westerly force 3-5 plus. HW LW HW LW 02:55 09:25 15:10 21:57 4.5m 1.5m 4.9m 1.2m Sunrise: 08:02 Sunset: 18:08 Sunday: Swell: 3-5ft plus, Wind: North / North Westerly force 3-5. HW LW HW LW 02:41 09:15 14:54 21:41 4.8m 1.2m 5.1m 1.1m Sunrise: 08:03 Sunset: 18:06 Areas Covered: Lands End to Bantham, mainly based around Praa Sands (does NOT include Dorset nor Sussex, unless specifically stated although clearly if we believe it to be cranking we will mention it, but it has to be over 2ft for us to even care). Note: certain swell amplifying spots may add an additional 2-3ft plus in deepest South Coast Kernow, those in the know will be well aware of this, so hunt and ye shall find
..
CHANNEL ISLANDS: Recommendations: Fun and bashable, you will be zooming all over the place to find shelter from the winds, and with that you will probably loose some size. But search and ye shall find
! Stay tuned for further updates, as things will undoubtedly change as the week goes on
Saturday: Swell: 4-6ft, Wind: South Westerly force 3-5 plus. HW LW HW LW 04:39 11:09 16:57 23:40 9.2m 2.9m 9.6m 2.4m Sunrise: 07:47 Sunset: 17:57 Sunday: Swell: 4-6ft, Wind: North / North Westerly force 3-5. HW LW HW LW 04:27 11:00 16:43 23:26 9.8m 2.3m 10.1m 2.0m Sunrise: 07:48 Sunset: 17:55 Areas Covered: Centred on Jersey, but applies to ALL the Channel Islands, you just need to adjust where applicable.
It should be remembered: - Regardless of the Weekend Outlook if there is surf, you should be out there to improve your surfing ability - so unless its flat, just ignore it(!) and go surfing. - The Weekend Outlook is aimed at those who are competent at paddling out in 6ft plus surf and looking for perfect conditions. - This is a SURF report, we care about the waves, as to whether it is sunny, rainy, snowy or hailing is incidental, and neither here nor there as far as we are concerned. - Also note that this is always written for midday, so there may be variances during the AM and PM. - Wave Heights are written in what you are actually taking in the face / duck diving, we are not into macho bs of measuring the wave from the back, this is the real thing, what you drop and ride = simple.
